| Katherine L. M. Powers Series Processes |

Series one and two processes are stream of conciousness. Series One: the rough shapes are developed on the canvas in oil as a yellow underpainting. Application of values helps to determine which aspects of the composition will become the primary characters of the piece with colors selected based on intiuitive associations with the evolving biology of the forms depicted. Series Two: random charcoal sketching is focused toward making marks that represent faces. Each character is elaborated upon in color using water mixable oil media on gessoed advertisment magnets. The choice of this substrate for these characters is a deliberate one; an attempt to prevent the censoring effects of the desire to create "high art." In this series, I want to be as honest and unsophisticated as possible and to see where it goes from there. Series Zero: glass (or more recently molten glucose) is arranged and lighted to produce painting subjects. Once again, an oil sketch of the subject is created by means of yellow underpainting and the image is developed starting from darkest regions and finishing with the brightest highlights. Transparent colors are applied directly over gessoed canvas where possible to provide high luminosity. My canvases are painted so that the image extends over the sides. People on budgets enjoy that they can simply hang my work on a nail, and I enjoy the slightly "off" look it lends to the finished works. |
